Scientists to investigate rift in Old Trafford time continuum

Scientists are to investigate a potential breakdown in the laws of the Universe which appear to have centred themselves over Old Trafford, the home of Manchester United.

The move comes after a number of reports claimed that a serious manipulation of the space time continuum had been successfully attained.

One witness told us, “I was watching the football, minding my own business, when this two minutes appeared from nowhere.”

“I don’t know if these minutes appeared in other parts of the country - or whether it just happened to us - but it made us all feel quite funny.”

Glitch

Professor Allbright of the Institute of Time Studies told us, “For years we have had individual reports of glitches in the time continuum,”

“Many reports coming from men having dinner with potential in-laws on evenings that apparently stretched into weeks.”

“But this is the first time we’ve had a report which affected so many people in a single location, it’s a significant breakthrough!”

The investigation is likely to centre on the pitch at  Old Trafford, which has become something of a ‘Bermuda triangle’ for space-time anomalies.

Conspiracy

Bedroom conspiracy theorists have long held that Manchester United boss, Sir Alex Ferguson, has been born with the gift of time manipulation, a bit like that Japanese bloke in Heroes.

“It’s easy to spot when it’s going to happen,” said keen conspiracy theorist, Dwight Fleck, 26.

“He waits until the last few minutes of a game which Manchester United are not winning, then stands-up and engages his pitch-side thousand yard stare.”

“Whilst looking out onto the pitch, he then begins rapidly and angrily tapping his watch. Somewhat miraculously, all these extra minutes then appear from nowhere.”

Professor Allbright concluded, “We need funding to investigate this further, because if could harness the time generation properties witnessed at Old Trafford, it might make long distance space travel a reality for this generation.”

City, The Best team in the Land

During the lifetime of the average Manchester City fan, as you all know, you go through some highs but more than likely some real lows. Whether you remember the Mercer-Allison years, or the younger fans maybe Dickov and company at Wembley in ‘99 are the memories that flood back to you as the best time for City. Certainly, unlike the highs, you do not have to go back decades to relive the lows. Relegation to the third tier of football would certainly rank high on many a list and I am sure I can list at least a dozen more without really thinking about it.

But I am not going to. Today, with the result against Arsenal have seen us equal the best post war start to a top flight season. That season, with Les McDowall as manager we enjoyed wins at home to Leicester and Fulham and away to Ipswich and a quick return against Fulham. That season, however we didn’t keep a clean sheet in those opening four games (in fact we only kept five all season) and had already been knocked out of the League Cup, downed 4-2 away to Ipswich.

Now for those looking for the cloud above the silver lining we did end up that season in mid-table and would go without a win, and just a single point from eight games, starting at the end of that October. Our next game, in that opening run would be against Burnley at Maine Road and that would be a loss. This means, now get ready to get excited ladies and gentlemen, that a point or more against the Bacon-Face Eleven and City would be enjoying their best start to any league season in post war history.

City do look a different prospect this season and Hughes has shown a really good handle of what was needed to be added to the squad in order to take us up a gear. Sure there will always be the negative aspects with the sale of Dunne and Elano but with Adebayor, Barry and Toure in particular I think he has done something a City manager hasn’t done for a long time, invested in quality, proven Premiership experienced players. Obviously time will tell and who knows with City what the eventual outcome of the season will be but I am sure it will be possibly the best chance for a long time, possibly dare I say in my life time, to win something and really make a statement to the rest of the Premier League, Europe and the World.

Now I mentioned earlier that a point or more would make the start to this season the best in post war history, and it’s true. What though, would make it better? What is the record for most wins from the start of the season? Well I am glad you asked! If we were to win against you know who next week and get a win against West Ham then we will have surpassed the start made by Ernest Mangalls’ team in the 1912-13 season. In that season City won their first five straight. We beat Notts Co, Man U, Aston Villa, Liverpool and Bolton (and only conceded one goal) before drawing the next away to Sheffield United.

So two more wins and we can boast the best start for over 100 years! However, in order to achieve the best start in City history, ever (Ardwick, St Marks included) then we would need to do the following: beat United, West Ham, Villa and Wigan! Sam Ormerod was the manager in 1897 when City won the seven opening games scoring 22 goals and conceding just three. HOWEVER it was in the second tier of English football AND we only won eight of the following 23 games finishing third.

I think I will just keep to the negotiated fact that 2 more league wins will result in City's best start in club history - in the top flight.

FA Charges Adebayor - But where are the charges for Arsenal???

So I think we all knew that it was coming. The Football association officially charged Emmanuel Adebayor with the incident involving his goal celebration as well as the alleged stomp on Robin Van Persie. This is the statement that appears on the FA website:

“The Football Association today issued two charges against Manchester City’s Emmanuel Adebayor following Saturday’s Premier League fixture between Manchester City and Arsenal."

Under the fast-track disciplinary process, Adebayor has been charged with violent conduct following an incident with Robin van Persie, which resulted in the Arsenal player receiving facial injuries.

Referee Mark Clattenburg has advised The FA that he did not see this incident, but has confirmed that had he done so, he would have sent Adebayor off for violent conduct. The player has until 6pm on Wednesday evening to respond to the charge.

Adebayor has also been charged with improper conduct following his actions when turning and running the full length of the pitch to celebrate in front of the Arsenal supporters after scoring.

The Greater Manchester Police have written to The FA with their views on this incident. A separate date will now be arranged for a commission to consider Adebayor’s goal celebration.

We have also asked the GMP and the clubs to identify those supporters involved in any violent and aggravating behaviour. The FA would like to see anyone found guilty of such behavior face action through the legal system and banning orders from football.

The FA would like to thank the Manchester City FC stewards for the way they managed a very difficult situation and to pass on sincere best wishes to the steward who was injured during the game.

We will continue to work with the LMA and PFA in particular to help remind players of their responsibilities, especially in highly charged situations.”

So first to the incitement of the crowd incident, I think that Adebayor was silly to do this. I understand that he was taking a lot of stick from the Arsenal fans from the very start and even before in the warm up.

However Adebayor no longer plays in a team that can side step the FA like his old club. Robin Van Persie clearly went over to the City faithful rather than his own fans and dropped one or more ‘F’ bombs. However the City fans didn’t try to invade the pitch.

I am glad to read that the FA have asked the relevant authorities to try to identify the Arsenal fans involved in the event as they are probably more to blame than Ade, and they tend to get treated with kid gloves with people eager to blame the player for decisions made by, you would hope, relatively sane members of the public.

One thing I am sure of is it will not involve the same level of media witch hunt that we all remember from May 2008 when City fans faces were splashed over the tabloid media following a disturbance at Middlesbrough.

Now lets talk about the ‘stamp’ incident. This really makes my blood boil, as I am sure it does with many of you. Mark Clattenburg, the referee on the day is in a good position to see Van Persie slide in from the blind side of Adebayor, sees nothing wrong with the tackle and even gestures for City to play on, AND then runs past RVP to make a ‘get up of your arse’ gesture.

Now, for some reason, he claims he didn’t see the incident and if he had Ade would have been sent off. What? Clattenburg needs to go back to officiating lower level games as this clearly is too difficult for him. I am not being harsh on him, if he is only a few yards away and misses a game changing incident (City would have been down to 10) then he needs to give it up, and that’s being kind.

The alternative is that he has taken in all the media over reaction and has changed his opinion accordingly.  Also, RVP was never booked for his celebration or the Adebayor initial tackle, and while I admit the referee couldn’t see the abuse he hurled during the celebration he could clearly see he was standing in front of City fans!

In fact, despite Eboue, Bedtner and RVP going to ground on Adebayor and the wipe out of SWP by Clichy only two Arsenal players made it into the refs book and none face ‘retro action’. The two Arsenal players booked were Sagna, who went in while the game was scoreless and Song, after 73 minutes. Both were for ‘Unsporting behaviour’.
